Spiritual Cardiologists

by Heather Tietz

Psalm 34:8-9

Oh taste and see that the LORD is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Oh fear the LORD, you his holy ones, for there is no lack with those who fear him.

Meat. Much of the world defines good eating with well-prepared meat, myself included.

But one day not long ago, a cardiologist told my husband that the only way to guarantee his heart health was to drop all animal products from his diet. He encouraged us to taste and see how good vegan eating could be. And, because we want my husband to live a long and healthy life, we followed the expert’s instructions.

It often takes a fearful life event like a near heart-attack, a divorce, a death, to send us seeking refuge in someone greater than us.

Many find their need for God in devastating life events. You and I, Christ’s followers, are like spiritual cardiologists. We can encourage those suffering alone that God is good. We know that if they just give Him a taste, try out a local Bible study, go to a prayer meeting, visit a church service, open a Bible, or call on Him in the quiet of their own space, they won’t be disappointed.

God is good. The moment His children turn toward Him, their hearts will begin healing for them too.

Reflection

Who do I know in need of a spiritual cardiologist? I will write a prayer for them today.

Prayer

Dear God, You alone are good. No matter what happens to me on this earth, You are my true refuge. You provide everything I could ever need, both here and forevermore. I love You with all my heart; it is wholly Yours. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
