From Scribbles to Sentences

by Darla Noble

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

In my office, I have a photo “clothesline” with a picture of each of my grandkids clipped to it.

Next to each photo are pictures they have colored and notes the older ones have written to me. I recently added one to Macy’s space on the clothesline — a letter she wrote telling me how excited she was to come see me, how much she loves me, and not to ever forget Jesus.

The letter itself was sweet, but what made it even sweeter was looking at one of the other letters she “wrote” a couple of years ago. It’s nothing more than a few scribbles, but it means the world to me because it was written by Macy and is evidence of how much she has grown.

That’s what God wants from us.

He wants to see us growing and maturing. To see us going from a baby Christian, to a toddler whose faith is a bit like Macy’s scribbles, to a faith that can compose full sentences that mine the depths of His love for us. And in each phase, He wants us to never forget Jesus.

God has begun a good work in you. Like any good parent, He loves to watch you grow. Are you growing in the right direction?

Reflection

Am I taking opportunities to grow in faith and in my relationship with God? How can I be more proactive to let God work in me?

Prayer

Holy God, Please keep me growing in faith and in my love for You every day. Please give me the confidence I need to continue growing as You want me to. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
