Advice from a Multi-Centenarian

by Heather Tietz

Deuteronomy 5:29

Oh that there were such a heart in them that they would fear me and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!

Centenarians — people who have lived at least 100 years — have advice for the rest of us. They’ve had a lot of life to acquire it!

“Don’t look at the calendar. Just keep celebrating every day.”

“Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it.”

“To stay healthy always, take the stairs and carry your own stuff!”

God has been around longer than any of us.

Today’s verse is His great cosmic sigh, His best advice for His wandering children. “Respect Me. Obey My laws. Life and eternity will go well for you and your families if you do.”

Respect for God is the start of living right. It’s where wisdom begins, according to Solomon (Proverbs 9:10).

If you want to know what choices to make in life, put everything through the sieve of God-fear. Whatever desires, ambitions, purchases, conversations can’t press through should probably be left behind. If you wouldn’t wish it, do it, plan it with Jesus in the room, then perhaps it isn’t right or righteous.

Long life is a gift from God. Respect Him and live to its fullest.

Reflection

When I reach my last day on earth, what might my grand advice be for those I love?

Prayer

Dear Holy Lord, Help me to take Your words to heart. Please guide my feet, my words, my thoughts, and my actions as I live my life. I want to reflect Your love to the world. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
