Believing Beyond Seeing

by Beatrice Jean-Baptiste

John 20:29

Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

People often say “seeing is believing” and, for the most part, no one can argue with that premise.

But in God’s kingdom, faith outweighs seeing. Faith goes beyond seeing.

When Jesus rose from the grave, He appeared to some of His disciples during Thomas’ absence. When the other disciples told Thomas about Jesus’ supernatural appearing, he doubted it.

Thomas refused to believe until he could see Jesus with his own eyes. In His grace and mercy, Jesus reappeared and showed Thomas His nail-scarred hands, proving that He had resurrected from the dead.

When it comes to belief, faith is more powerful than sight.

Jesus told Thomas that a special blessing was in store for those who would believe in Him without seeing Him. When Jesus was talking to Thomas, he had in mind every believer who would fully embrace the gospel truth in faith before seeing Jesus face to face. Faith goes beyond seeing to believe in the goodness of God and in the power of the Cross.

So take heart. Claim your blessing. Jesus died on the cross for you and He’s coming again. If you believe in Him, then you are blessed indeed!

Reflection

Why does Jesus give a special blessing to those who believe without seeing Him face to face? Is anything keeping me from claiming that blessing today?

Prayer

Heavenly Lord, I thank You for Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for me. By faith, I believe in Him even though I can’t see Him. Please continue to reveal Yourself to me and help me to cultivate a faith that goes beyond the natural eye. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
