Spiritual Superfood

by Heather Tietz

John 6:51

“I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

Quinoa, a seed from the Chenopodium plant, has been called a “superfood.”

It is both a whole protein and a whole-grain carbohydrate. That means that the nine essential amino acids your body must have to function properly are all provided in one of these tiny super seeds.

Quinoa is super high in fiber too (twice as high as other whole grains), so it has the ability to boost digestive health, lower the risk of digestive cancers, reduce the risk of a stroke and raise your good cholesterol.

Quinoa seems like a modern day manna. But unlike the real manna, you can’t survive on it. In fact, taking in too much can actually reduce your intestine’s ability to absorb important nutrients.

Quinoa couldn’t have been the miracle manna. As far as we know that disappeared from earth completely… until Jesus came.

Jesus called Himself the “bread of heaven,” manna, the spiritual superfood that is both living water and complete spiritual sustenance.

Taking Jesus into our lives — praying, trusting, hoping, loving, having a heart that seeks God’s will, gives us all the spiritual nutrients we need to sustain us forever.

Reflection

Jesus called Himself manna: Bread of heaven. How often do I eat of this Bread? If I continue the metaphor, what food am I most like to others?

Prayer

Creator God, Yes, Lord, I take Your living bread into my life. Let it nourish and sustain me. Let Your goodness fill my soul. Please let Your love and peace strengthen my spirit to handle the plans You have for me today. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
