Hidden Words; Holy Hearts

by Brenda Kis

Psalm 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

She read and reread the letter, savoring the news, imagining him in all his activities, squeezing out every drop of love from his words to her.

They had been apart for a year and every day when she awoke, her heart and mind flew over the ocean to the school where they had met. Often, she remembered snatches of conversations they’d had when together. Their love story enveloped her world and affected everything she did, every decision she made, because soon they would be together again!

The writer of this Psalm must have had a similar relationship with God.

He read God’s letter (the Scriptures) every day, pondered each phrase, each promise, each bit of advice. His daily decisions hinged on God’s words to him. His desire was to maintain the connection he had with his Lord and Friend, to honor Him and delight Him by paying attention to what He said. He did not want to bring God sorrow in any way, just as earthly friends seek to protect their relationship.

Isn’t that what it means to hide God’s Word in your heart? To first read it, then think about it and imagine what it would mean for your life, to secure it there in the core of your being so that whatever you do, you won’t damage this precious relationship by sinning against Him?

Reflection

Whose words am I cherishing and hiding in my heart today?

Prayer

Lord God, Please help me to see that I am being shaped according to whatever I hide in my heart each day. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
