In the house of the righteous is much treasure, but the income of the wicked brings trouble.
In today’s proverb, Solomon shares with his son a study in “cause and effect.“
Generally speaking, a family’s present state is indicative of its spiritual lineage. In other words, a man’s sinful choices and the consequences of those choices can reach far beyond his own self and permeate into his immediate household.
The Second Commandment warns, God shall visit [punish] “the iniquity [sin] of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation” (Exodus 20:5). What this means is that the consequences of sin can and will bleed over into the next generation(s) of a family because of the act itself. It’s what a lot of people would call the ‘snowball-effect’.
But it’s not just the bad things that leave their legacy behind. Solomon states that the household of the righteous enjoys the blessings of God, but the wicked fall into trouble. In other words, when we live righteously and recognize God’s blessings for what they are, we can pass that down to our family, as well.
Father, help me to pass down righteousness and the prosperity that comes from You to those I love. In Jesus’ precious Name, I pray, Amen.
