The Difference Between Needs and Wants

by Darla Noble

My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19

When my granddaughter was a toddler, instead of saying she wanted something she would always say she needed something. For example, if she wanted to go outside to play, she would say, “Nanna, I need to go outside.” Or when she wanted chocolate covered raisins (her favorite snack), she said, “Nanna I need yummy raisins.”

Sometimes we do the same thing—we confuse our wants with our needs. And when we don’t get what we want, we accuse God of not keeping His promises. We accuse Him of not being there for us. But that simply is not true. God always has, always does, and always will supply all our needs out of the wealth of the universe, which is His.

When you recognize the truth that God really does supply all your needs, you will discover what a blessing it is to be God’s precious child and a recipient of His vast treasures.

Pray: God, thank You for sharing Your wealth with me. Thank You for knowing what I need—even better than I do—and giving it to me. In your son’s name, I pray, Amen.
