During Jesus’ time, the Imperial Roman Empire had a dominating military.

The government issued soldiers an assortment of protective clothing. Some were supplied only helmets and shields. But those in the upper classes were given a full set of armor: tunics made of layered strips or scales of metal, segmented arm covers, metal leg covers, shields, helmets, cleated boots, spears, and swords. With this protective armor, Rome was able to dominate the Mediterranean for half a millennium.

Anyone who declares their loyalty to Jesus is part of His kingdom and His army. Like a royal heir, they too are given a set of full protective armor, armor that can knock down any ammunition the Enemy throws, including temptations, bad temperaments, lack of self-control, fear, jealousy, and depression.

We aren’t empty-handed. We have spiritual weapons: a belt of truth, a breastplate of righteousness, a shield of faith, a helmet of salvation, the sword of the Spirit, and footwear of the gospel. All these things are fitted on with prayer.

Whatever circumstances come, we can walk empowered through our day. We can have peace. We can retain our joy and find success in our interactions with others.

We can overcome the enemy and claim the social sphere around us for God’s kingdom.
