One Word: A Whole Lot Of Meaning

by Darla Noble

1 Corinthians 1:30

Because of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who was made to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption.

When is the last time you used the word “sanctification” in a conversation?

You probably can’t remember when — if ever — because it’s one of those “church words” we don’t use very often.

Okay, hardly ever.

But today’s verse features the word. And sanctification is something we need to think about every single day.

To be sanctified means to be blessed, dedicated, approved, purified, and even holy.

If we submit our lives to God through Jesus in baptism for the forgiveness of our sins, we are these things. So, our submission and our repentance allows Jesus’ sacrifice to make us pure. Clean. Perfect. Sanctified.

I don’t know about you, but when I think about that, it humbles me. It helps me to see myself for who and what I really am: completely unworthy of mercy, but thankful beyond words that it’s mine.

Reflection

What does sanctification mean to me? How can I know if I am sanctified? I will set a reminder to ask God every morning for His sanctifying power.

Prayer

Heavenly God, Thank You for sending Jesus to this world. Thank You for giving me the honor of being Yours, holy and sanctified, loved and cherished forever. I pray I will keep my heart and mind focused on the wisdom of Your Word. I commit my life to You anew. Please hold me close. Never let me go. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
