Peace Treaty with God

by Heather Tietz

Ezekiel 37:26

Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them. It will be an everlasting covenant with them. I will place them, multiply them, and will set my sanctuary among them forever more.

Manmade covenants of peace are faulty.

June 28, 1919, ended World War I with one of the most faulty of all peace treaties, the Treaty of Versailles. It was supposed to bring justice and peace to the major world powers, but it had quite the contrary effect.

Instead of peace, it churned up resentment in the heart of the losing side. In today’s dollars, it forced the equivalent of a $442 billion war debt on Germany, a debt that took nearly a century to pay off. Meanwhile, instead of cultivating peace with the rest of the world, it pushed Germany to embrace a ruler who would fight to gain the country’s pride back. The peace treaty ultimately sparked the Second World War.

Manmade treaties often offer only superficial peace. Countries may shake hands, but their hearts are not resolved.

The prophet Ezekiel explains that God wants to make real peace with us.

He wants to end the unfriendly relations between Himself and mankind. He wants back that sweet friendship He shared with Adam and Eve so long ago. So God sent Jesus, a human peace treaty, faultless, fair, and never-ending. Jesus came to turn God’s enemies into allies, and allies into family!

If we’re willing to put our name on His covenant, peace everlasting and peace within are ours today.

Reflection

Do I feel at peace with God? What could I do to improve my relationship with my Savior?

Prayer

Yes, God, I want peace with You. I claim Jesus as mine: my teacher, helper, counselor, and friend. Thank You for being my sanctuary. I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
