I Like Old Things

by Darla Noble

Matthew 13:52

He said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been made a disciple in the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a householder, who brings out of his treasure new and old things.”

I like old things.

I like old quilts, dishes, buildings, pictures, and memories. I like reading about history and watching old movies. I enjoy reading the Old Testament.

As much as I enjoy old things, however, I am not a packrat. I don’t keep stuff just for the sake of keeping it and I have very little in the way of “I may need that someday,” or “that might come in handy for something” squirreled away. No, the old things I have are either useful or tied to specific and precious memories.

Making sure the “old things” in our lives are useful and spiritually beneficial is what today’s verse is all about.

We shouldn’t hold on to things “just in case” or because we might need to fall back on them. We have everything we need in God. The only “old things” we need to hang on to are His Word, which never goes out of style, and the teachings and examples of others who have served as examples of Godly living.

Today, take a few minutes to take an inventory of your life. What old things from your past are you holding on to — things that are keeping you from holding on to God?

Get rid of them so you can get a tighter grip on what matters most in life.

Reflection

What will I let go of today to give me a better tomorrow?

Prayer

Dear God, Please help me clean up my past, keeping what is good and getting rid of what isn’t. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
