A History of Humility

by Darla Noble

James 4:10

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Joseph could easily have lorded his authority and power over his brothers; making them pay dearly for what they had done to him (see Genesis 37-45 for the whole fascinating story). But he didn’t. Instead, he humbled himself before God and allowed God to work through him to serve them.

Similarly, Moses could never have done what he did, leading hundreds of thousands of formerly enslaved people for an entire generation, helping to form them into a functioning nation (read about it in the book of Exodus), without humbling himself to God’s authority and leadership.

Jesus wouldn’t have suffered and died on the cross for you and me if not for His humility to God.

Those who dedicated themselves to the formation of our country also humbled themselves to God. We see this in the numerous references to God’s divine intervention in bringing our country into existence.

Likewise, you and I will never realize the full potential of our existence, nor experience the true measure of God’s comfort and leadership, until we humble ourselves to God — the Creator and Ruler of all. Only when we bow down to Him can He elevate our lives and lift us up.

Reflection

How often do I humble myself before God? How do I feel when I bow before Him?

Prayer

Dear God, Please give me a humble heart and mind — one that is willing to follow You in all things. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
