Take Refuge in Jesus

by Pastor Ken

Psalm 5:11

But let all those who take refuge in you rejoice. Let them always shout for joy, because you defend them. Let them also who love your name be joyful in you.

When the King of Judah, Hezekiah, was surrounded by the Assyrian Army, he could not see any way to victory.

It was a crisis. Hezekiah sensed that without God’s help, the country was on the verge of total destruction. He ordered his people not to respond to the Assyrian commander, Rabshakeh, who belittled God.

King Hezekiah chose not to focus on the Assyrian army. Instead, totally dependent on God, he prayed with all his people: “Now, therefore, LORD our God, save us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You, LORD, are God alone” (2 Kings 19:19).

He took refuge in the same God who destroyed the Egyptian army in Moses’ time. And God responded! He had His angel kill the entire Assyrian Army of 185,000 and let the Assyrian king be killed as well (2 Kings 19:35-37).

God is able to fight your battles today, too, if you take refuge in Him. Do you face any seemingly impossible situations that you cannot see any way out of? It may be time for you to choose God as your refuge.

Reflection

How can I be closer to God? How will I take full refuge in Him — especially when I do not readily see any solutions to my problems?

Prayer

Dear God, I take refuge in You. Fight for me as You did King Hezekiah. Help me to recognize Your constant victory in my life. I rejoice; I shout for joy. I will always be joyful in You. In Jesus’ ever-victorious name I pray, Amen.
