A Willing, Able Listener

by Brenda Kis

Psalm 139:4

For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, LORD, you know it altogether.

I thought carefully about the letter, trying to put down on paper what was in my heart.

It was difficult, because the recipient was not someone who listens well. In fact, I had tried to tell her some things previously and she had brushed me off with an emotional outburst. Finally satisfied that I had said my piece well and graciously, and having passed it through a discerning friend beforehand, I sent it on.

Sadly, my words were received as I feared they would be.

Totally ignoring the gentle tone of the letter, its reader stormed into my office and shouted through my open door. It was no use. She was not willing or able to listen.

This verse portrays Someone who is able and willing, Someone who knows the unexpressed messages of our hearts. When we struggle and cry, He knows why. When anger wells up at injustice, He perfectly discerns and understands.

We are not alone. This is why I can live alone.

Speaking aloud to God and reading His promises are precious habits that reassure me and accompany me in my widowhood. God hears every word I say, even when I speak only in my heart. He is the ultimate companion who can take our lonely journey with us and help us become a blessing to others.

Reflection

How am I listening to God in my loneliness?

Prayer

Lord God, You are the best Friend anyone could have. Thank You for hearing me and walking with me in my solitude. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
