Who Felt Lonely in the Bible?

David was often alone. In the Psalms, he expresses the experience so poetically and with feeling. Jonah was alone in the dark belly of a great fish. Jeremiah was so lonely, the people called him a weeping prophet. Even my Savior was incredibly alone when He was on the cross. I can identify with others’ loneliness, gaining comfort and wisdom from their experiences.
David expresses his loneliness and waits for God
Psalm 25:16-21
Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged. Oh bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins. Consider my enemies, for they are many. They hate me with cruel hatred. Oh keep my soul, and deliver me. Let me not be disappointed, for I take refuge in you. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for you.
Jeremiah’s lonely cry: I sat alone, my pain is perpetual
Jeremiah 15:17-18
I didn’t sit in the assembly of those who make merry and rejoice. I sat alone because of your hand, for you have filled me with indignation. Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Will you indeed be to me as a deceitful brook, like waters that fail?
The Lord’s promise of deliverance from Jeremiah’s lonely situation
Jeremiah 15:21
“I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem you out of the hand of the terrible.”
Jesus’ lonely shout on the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Mark 15:34
At the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is, being interpreted, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
The prophet Isaiah foresaw our Savior, Christ Jesus, as a man of lonely suffering
Isaiah 53:3
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him.
