A Bit Like Candy

by Katelyn Molloy

Ecclesiastes 9:17

The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the cry of him who rules among fools.

During my freshman year of college, my friend’s mom sent them a box full of candy.

Knowing that I had a sweet tooth, they invited me over to share. We piled the candy onto the center of their bed, put a movie on, and dug in.

The first piece was fantastic, it melted in my mouth and coated my taste buds in sugary sweetness. The second and third pieces were just as good. The fourth and fifth pieces went down a bit slower, while the sixth and seventh left me with a headache.

Pretty soon I was sick. And even though I knew I had eaten a lot, I still felt empty and considerably worse than before.

The world is a bit like that. It offers sweet tasting delicacies that we think will make us feel good; but in the end only leave us feeling hollow.

God’s Word offers something much better. Instead of leaving us hungry and dissatisfied, His Word nourishes and strengthens our bodies, minds, and souls, giving us wisdom and guidance for a blessed life.

In the busy and chaotic world we live in, it’s important to take time out of our days to sit with God in peaceful quietness, filling our souls with God’s wise words instead of the world’s empty ones.

Reflection

Do I have a specific time set aside to talk with God, read His Word, and listen to Him speaking? What is my plan for deliberately filling myself with God’s wisdom?

Prayer

Dear God, Please help me to fill my mind with the quiet wisdom of Your Word. Don’t let the noise of the world drown You out. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
