God’s Planted Magic

by Heather Tietz

Psalm 77:1-3

My cry goes to God! Indeed, I cry to God for help, and for him to listen to me. In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord. My hand was stretched out in the night, and didn’t get tired. My soul refused to be comforted. I remember God, and I groan. I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed. Selah.

God has planted His magic all over the world. Literally!

Forty percent of pharmaceutical medicines are derived from plants. Seeds, bark, leaves and roots contain medicine magic that prevent blood clots, fix heart arrhythmia, relieve pain and kill off infections.

But plants aren’t only beneficial for the body; they are also good for the spirit.

Plants can actually produce peace.

Studies show that plants provide psychological benefits for people. Classrooms decorated with plants increase learners’ ability to concentrate and so more easily absorb and retain information. Businesses decorated with plants create a calmer environment that in turn increases the accuracy of tasks. Even just a small plant on a desk increases productivity. Plants inside homes create a less stressful atmosphere.

Plants are God’s handiwork.

When worry overwhelms and the world feels dark, God hears our cries. We may need a walk in God’s creation, a breath of newly made oxygen, a moment to inspect the detail of a bloom, the texture of tree bark, the veins on a leaf.

Plants are from the mind and hands of our own Creator, an outpouring of who He is — majestic, orderly, complicated and beautiful. Whether we’re in the dark or light, inside or out, we can come to Him to calm our anxieties.

Reflection

What are some of my favorite plants? How might spending time in nature, surrounded by God’s creation, help alleviate my worries as I cry out to my Creator?

Prayer

Thank You, Creator God, for filling this earth with answers. Reveal to me how to keep my anxieties under control and how to help those I love do the same. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
