I have two grandchildren in the United States military. One is in the Navy; the other is in the Army.

Both had to attend basic training. They had to run, low crawl, and march in sequence from one place to another, perfectly following the stern commands from their drill sergeants. When the training was over, they became soldiers, part of a unique community recognized around the world with respect and dignity.

Life is tough sometimes. The choices we make often force us to accept unexpected challenges. Some turn to drugs, alcohol, or crime, choosing to become members of a group that adds hardship to their lives.

One choice we must make in our lifetime determines where we spend eternity.

Acts 2:46-47 sends us a message of joy, painting a picture of the early church praising God in their homes and in their church where they regularly gathered.

My grandchildren might be part of an elite group of soldiers, but they must also choose to become part of a group that enables them to spend eternity with God. Everyone must make such a choice. Those who might be famous or rich are also in need of our God.

The church gives us a place to assemble as a community and grow in the riches of God’s grace.
