Breaking the Loneliness Trend

by Heather Tietz

Psalm 27:10

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.

Loneliness is on the rise.

According to the American Psychological Association, loneliness is more of a public health risk than obesity.

Technology allows us to make instant social connections with friends and strangers. Yet, studies show that those individuals who turn to social media most often are the same ones who consider themselves most lonely. Quantity of conversations doesn’t seem to be the cure. It’s all about quality. Loneliness is relieved when people gain connections with others, when they feel listened to and understood.

Connecting begins with family. Yet, often our busy lives, our hectic schedules rob us of together-time with the people who are built to understand us most. Family meals, family outings, game-nights, bedtime routines, date nights, evening strolls, story times don’t always fit into our schedules. That crazy thing that happened at school doesn’t get shared. The nightmare you had, what the bullying co-worker did today, that embarrassing moment, your newest great idea — no one hears it and nods; no one sighs and gives you a hug.

Family fails us sometimes.

But God doesn’t.

If we’re following Jesus, then God is our family too. He is both father and mother. He is both counselor and friend. He listens. Talk to Him. More than anyone ever could, He understands.

Reflection

Am I disconnected from anyone I used to be close to? How might I go about connecting more fully with the people around me? In what ways can I give my loneliness over to God?

Prayer

Rescue me, Lord, from my loneliness. Help me to feel Your presence listening, understanding, and embracing me. Lead me to connect my heart with others who need to be heard, too. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
