Abundant Blessings

by Erica Cosgrove

Psalm 103:2-5

Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases; who redeems your life from destruction; who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies; who satisfies your desire with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Too often, I find myself stuck in a rut where my prayers sound like a long list of complaints or wishes.

In the Psalms, we see plenty of prayers to God that reflect this side of our human nature, where the Psalmist is lamenting to God or pleading with God for things.

However, there is another large category of Psalms in which the writer simply spends time listing the blessings God has given them and thanking Him for them. This is the part of my prayer life that I often neglect.

In Psalm 103, the psalmist lists things such as health, protection, love, and mercy as the blessings that God has given. When I look at my life and start thinking about all the blessings God has given, I could make a very long list. From the small things, such as a hug from a loved one, to the big things like a new job, God has given abundant blessing.

One thing that helped me start seeing just how much God has blessed me is by keeping a gratitude journal. A practice such as this allows you to be mindful of God’s present blessings and reminds you of all He has given you in the past. Try to take some time today to list out God’s blessings.

Reflection

What blessings has God given me this week? How have I thanked Him for them?

Prayer

Dear God, I am sorry for tending to focus on what I don’t have. Thank You for the abundant blessings You have given me. I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
