Memorial Day. Remembrance Day. Martyrs’ Day. Honoring the memories of those who gave their lives for a cause they believed in transcends cultures and countries.
Throughout history, so many of God’s children have died while warring against each other. As we remember our fallen loved ones, let us also remember Jesus. Thanks to His sacrifice on the cross, our greatest battle is already won!
Self-sacrifice is the definitive act of love
John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
God is the ultimate judge
Psalm 82:3-4, 8
Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy. Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked. Arise, God, judge the earth, for you inherit all of the nations.
Even in death, God’s faithful friends are free
Psalm 116:15-16
Precious in the LORD’s sight is the death of his holy ones. LORD, truly I am your servant. I am your servant, the son of your servant girl. You have freed me from my chains.
Jesus commands me to love sacrificially as He did
John 13:34
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.
Humble service to others is the epitome of following Christ
Philippians 2:1-4
If there is therefore any exhortation in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassion, make my joy full, by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind; doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.
