The Prodigal Son had a brother.

We often overlook him in the parable Jesus told. While one reckless son was out selfishly wasting his inheritance, a loyal one remained at home. He stayed about his father’s business, serving him faithfully, perhaps even bearing a greater burden of work because his sibling was away.

Yet, while he labored, his bed was soft, his robes were clean, his food was warm. He had his father’s quiet appreciation. Though there was no party, no bonus check, no recognition of his good behavior, he had all he needed.

We are, perhaps, often in the shoes of the prodigal’s brother.

We see others gaining the wealth of the world, enjoying an excess of leisure time and money while we work hard to stay true to our responsibilities. We serve our families and do the best we can.

Sometimes the prodigal’s life looks appealing. Before the tabloids come out with the gossip, before we hear how the stress of fame and fortune has ruined their health, marriage, and sanity, we gaze with longing at their life.

We can trust that, as we remain faithful to our heavenly Father, our needs will be met. God promises a good future for His children. One heavenly day we, too, will join in the celebration.
