What Does the Bible Say About Death?

As long as sin lasts, Death will plague our planet. From the moment Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s instructions until now, the cold fingers of death have held every living thing in their grasp.

The Bible mentions death or dying over 500 times. Though Scripture has much to say about death, it never fails to encourage us to praise God for the gift of Jesus, who has overcome death once and for all!

Death is the inevitable outcome of life on this sin-filled earth

Job 30:23

For I know that you will bring me to death, to the house appointed for all living.

The dead don’t know anything

Ecclesiastes 9:5

For the living know that they will die, but the dead don’t know anything, neither do they have any more a reward; for their memory is forgotten.

Death is a direct result of sin; it affects everyone

Romans 5:12

Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; so death passed to all men, because all sinned.

The dead are silent; they cannot praise God.

Psalm 115:17

The dead don’t praise Yah, neither any who go down into silence.

Death is a sleep; belief in Jesus gives me hope and helps me stop grieving those who have died

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

How a person lives determines what happens to their soul after they die

Ezekiel 33:8-9

When I tell the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you don’t speak to warn the wicked from his way; that wicked man will die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand. Nevertheless, if you warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he doesn’t turn from his way; he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.
