Ginger for Our Spirit

by Heather Tietz

2 Peter 1:2

Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

My family has a genetic predisposition for a connective tissue disorder.

Shoulders can pop out of place, elbows dislocate in the middle of gymnastics routines, or your lower esophagus sphincter (the door at the top of your stomach) may not work properly. That means heartburn. If I’ve broken any of the 10 Commandments of Food, like laying down after eating, or not having breakfast 30 minutes after taking my medication, no apple, no chamomile tea, no antacid can rescue me.

Recently, however, I found something that can.

Chewing a tiny sliver of raw ginger brings instantaneous relief. So far, no matter how big my food sin is, ginger puts my stomach at peace, and the health that I may not deserve is graciously restored to me.

We need grace and peace in our lives.

We make mistakes. We overeat of life. We taste the wrong things. Fortunately, there is a spiritual ginger for our sins: Jesus.

In His Word we see He’s eager to forgive. He’s empowered to help. He’s kindhearted toward the humble and burdened. He can enable us to be like Him. Choosing Him as the medicine for our troubles opens the door to grace. Chewing on His words brings peace. Then life can be digested more pleasantly.

Reflection

What metaphor would I use to describe how Jesus has been a help in my own life?

Prayer

Dear Jesus, I’m so grateful I can turn to You for peace and grace. I need them daily! Please help me to continually increase my knowledge of You. You are everything I need. In Your name I pray, Amen.
