As the old saying goes, “Good things come in small packages.”

Today’s verse alludes to this. The prophet Micah, upon revelation from on high, predicted that Bethlehem, a town that paled in comparison of significance to Jerusalem and many others, would be the birthplace of the future, permanent Ruler of Israel. This is one of the hundreds of prophecies that Jesus fulfilled through the Father’s orchestration of circumstances.

So much about Jesus was small or “subpar,” so to speak.

• He did not arrive on the scene as a conquering king; He arrived as an infant.

• He did not have royal, wealthy parents; Joseph and Mary were poor.

• He grew up in Nazareth, a town with an unenviable reputation.

• Worst of all, He did not even die with an ounce of dignity; He suffered the most humiliating execution possible.

Most of us have probably received presents that were wrapped in shiny paper and topped with a pretty, vibrant bow that helped heighten our excitement.

However, let’s make sure that we don’t let the lack of flash and sizzle diminish our awe and appreciation of heaven’s unmatchable gift.
