God’s Waiting Room

by John Michalak

Psalm 33:20-22

Our soul has waited for the LORD. He is our help and our shield. For our heart rejoices in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Let your loving kindness be on us, LORD, since we have hoped in you.

We make the doctor’s appointment. We check in at the front desk. We find a comfortable seat.

And then we wait.

We can spend a fair amount of time in waiting rooms. We read magazines. Perhaps we talk to the person next to us. But we’re reminded that it’s important to make the best of our time because eventually we’ll get what we came for.

You are born into a type of waiting room. God is the doctor you’re waiting to see. You know you need Him. You know He can help you. But you’re told you must wait before you can enjoy the full benefits of seeing Him in person.

Rather than a few old magazines, God’s waiting room is filled with reminders of His creative handiwork — towering oak trees, laughing babies, chirping birds. You are placed in a world that reminds you the doctor you’ll one day see is really good at what He does. That should fill your heart with hope and thanksgiving.

So, find a seat, rejoice in the Lord, and look forward to the day when your name is called and it’s finally your turn to meet Him face to face.

Reflection

In what ways has God helped me lately? In what ways has He been my shield?
