What Is Wealth?

by Darla Noble

Proverbs 10:22

The LORD’s blessing brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.

Melissa’s family lives in a big house, has a mid-six-figure income, and lives a lifestyle that reflects their material wealth.

But Melissa knows her husband has cheated on her more than once and her youngest daughter spent last summer in a rehab facility to help her deal with a serious eating disorder.

Dana is a stay-at-home-mom to her four children. Her husband‘s salary is sufficient to cover their needs and provide a few extras now and then, but vacations consist of camping trips, the three girls share a bedroom, and they have family movie nights in their back yard instead of going to the theater. But Dana and her husband have a marriage built on love, trust, and faithfulness to God and to one another.

So who is experiencing the wealth of God’s blessings — a wealth with no trouble added to it?

Wealth is about so much more than dollars and cents. Wealth is abundance. But the wealth that comes with the Lord’s blessings doesn’t include trouble. The wealth that comes from God doesn’t cause heartache or stress and it never tempts you to put anything you have or do in a position of greater importance than God.

Reflection

What can I do to show my family I value the wealth of love they bring me over any material possession?

Prayer

Dear Lord, Please open my heart and mind to desire true wealth — the wealth of Your blessings. Please help me remember that wealth is not merely a measure of earthly prosperity. I thank You for the abundant blessings You have given me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
