The Joy Perspective

by Heather Tietz

Deuteronomy 16:15

You shall keep a feast to the LORD your God seven days in the place which the LORD chooses; because the LORD your God will bless you in all your increase, and in all the work of your hands, and you shall be altogether joyful.

Happiness and joy are truly different plants.

Happiness springs up in a moment and then quickly dies. It grows from circumstance and obtaining those things that we desire. Joy, on the other hand, has deeper roots. It comes from satisfaction with “who you are, why you are, where you are in life.” That’s how psychologist Rachael Fernley describes it. Happiness grows from a pleasant environment; joy grows from a pleasant perspective.

Following Jesus changes our view. Undoubtedly, He’ll give us moments of happiness. But having God’s perspective will grow in us deep-rooted, long-lasting joy.

The Israelites in this passage are about to be blessed by God, about to be given many moments of happiness. They stand on the edge of the Promised Land. Joshua is before them like a father ready to let loose his children into Grandpa’s house.

“This is the land God has been preparing for you,” he explains. “Look at your life from this perspective — you are a people chosen by God.”

For the Israelites, whatever sun, rain, or famine came their way, they remained God’s chosen. Those who cultivated that truth in their perspective had joy.

It’s the same for us.

Whatever happens, we are always people loved by God. Look out at your Promised Land and let joy grow in you.

Reflection

How much joy is in my perspective of who I am, why I am, and where I am in life? How can I increase my joy?

Prayer

Thank You, God, for Your abundant love. Help me see Your care in the details of my life. Please grow Your joy in me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
