Where’s My Joy?

by Pastor Ken

Jeremiah 15:16

Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words were to me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart, for I am called by your name, the LORD, God of Hosts.

How can you overcome heartache and despair?

According to today’s verse, joy and delight come from devouring God’s Word. That means more than simply reading the Bible — we need to memorize it and meditate on it.

In 1910, the evangelist Luther Bridgers was traveling to preach the Word. His wife and three boys stayed with her parents while he was away. One night, the house they were in caught on fire and Bridger’s wife and three sons died.

When Bridgers heard the tragedy, he was crushed. He immediately knelt down and prayed to God and studied the Bible. And he allowed God to do what no human counselor could do.

After a time, he felt the joy that only God’s word can give. He knew he would see his family again in heaven.

As he felt the healing strength of God pour over him and fill him with a joy that the world can never know, he penned the words to a song that has filled many of us with hope across the years: “There’s Within My Heart a Melody.”

When you are in stormy seas of life, there comes One who can give you joy and peace. God’s Word is a joy — no matter what you’re going through.

Reflection

How can I have joy in studying the Bible today? How can I make immersing myself in God’s Word a daily joy?

Prayer
