Crossing the Hall

by David Haase

Matthew 11:5

The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.

My wife was very ill.

After spending ten days in intensive care, she had been moved to a recovery room.

A family was singing to their loved one across the hall. What a beautiful sound came from their room. They closed the door, thinking they were bothering us, but I went across the hall and asked them not to shut the door to such a beautiful sound.

We all shook hands, introduced ourselves, and I went back to my wife’s room.

Shortly after, they came to my wife’s room and asked if they could sing for her. She immediately said yes. My wife said that the songs this gifted family sang were the best medicine she had received during all the time in the hospital.

Though my wife was young, she was so ill the doctors told her she had only a short time to live.

It has been 15 years since I crossed the hall to ask the singers to minister to my wife. God used their talents and faith to richly bless us.

God gifted my wife with more health and strength than the doctors could explain. And she continues to live — a testament to His healing power.

Reflection

Am I willing to go where God leads, using my talents to minister to others on His behalf?

Prayer

Loving, merciful Savior, Help me to be ready to go wherever You lead. Make me willing to cross a hall, a room, a country, or the ocean all for the privilege of telling more of Your children about Your great love for us. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
