The young boy standing in the sun-warmed field watching the family cow could not have known that poverty and the mockery of his community would someday bless thousands of people.

Every day, his family struggled to find enough food for their meal. When one child outgrew an article of clothing, the next one wore it, and on, and on, until the rag could no longer appear in public. He even had to wear his mother’s slippers to school because shoes cost too much.

When the boy grew older, he finally had the chance to leave his Communist country and go to the west for an education. From there, his life continued to blossom, and eventually, he obtained his Ph.D. degree from a prestigious university.

He became a university professor and was often called to speak around the world, encouraging audiences with stories from his grinding childhood and his confidence in God’s ability to transform our problems into blessings.

When Miroslav Kis died, a great crowd mourned his loss and his widow received messages from grieving people around the world.

The word “temptation” in today’s verse can also be translated “trial.” Hunger and shame were certainly trials in this young man’s life, but look what God did!
