Crowned in Wisdom

by Beatrice Jean-Baptiste

Proverbs 1:8-10

My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching; for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck. My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.

When I was a child, my parents used everyday opportunities as teaching lessons.

My dad would always say, “What you don’t like, don’t give.” It was his version of the Golden Rule found in Matthew 7:12, focused on the principle of reciprocity.

My mother, on the other hand, would often share a cultural proverb with a moral lesson.

Because we don’t come with an instruction manual, God strategically places special people in our surroundings to help us navigate through the ins and outs of life.

In the first chapter of Proverbs, King Solomon shares nuggets of wisdom with his son to ensure he follows the right path. Solomon encourages his son to listen. Listening goes beyond hearing. Listening allows us to internalize messages of truth. Wisdom allows us to apply those messages to our lives. By doing so, we are able to grow in our understanding of God and the world around us.

Growing in wisdom is not accidental; it is an intentional process. Wisdom doesn’t occur by happenstance. It’s an everyday choice to internalize the teachings of the Bible as a child adheres to their parents’ instructions.

Adopting a lifestyle rooted in godly wisdom allows wisdom to adorn you like a crown on your head, dazzling for all to see.
