He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.
I’ll never forget watching a portion of an amazing triathlon race a few years back when Jeff Agar, a father with bulging muscles, took his adult son, Johnny, along with him.
Johnny, helpless with cerebral palsy, lay in a small boat as his dad pulled him along while swimming. During the bicycling part of the race, the son sat in a special chair at the front of his dad’s bike. And when “they” ran, he sat in front of his father who pushed his “chariot” along.
Between each segment of the triathlon, Jeff picked Johnny up and carried him to the next vehicle, carefully strapping him in. As they crossed the finish line, the crowd went wild with admiration for the father who helped his son experience the joy of victory. They won the race together!
What an incredible demonstration of love and grace.
The father didn’t force his son to come along. His son wanted to go! Wrapped in weakness, he consented to let his father have control of the situation and do whatever needed to be done.
This is the heart of today’s verse. Our weakness is no obstacle to our victory because Christ has won the race, bringing us salvation by grace, showing His power through our weakness as we allow Him to take control of our lives.
What is hindering me from letting God direct my life?
Dear God, Please help me relinquish the need to be in control and let You lead me. Do what I cannot — through Christ, in Whose name I pray, Amen.
