Ten Times Better

by Pastor Ken

Daniel 1:8-9

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank. Therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Now God made Daniel find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.

The account of Daniel and his friends presented in today’s verse was recorded to give us the encouragement and confidence to be a representative of Christ here on earth.

Though they were captives in a strange land, Daniel and his friends wanted to maintain their healthy eating habits and physical condition out of respect for God. They knew the foods God provides were the best for them.

The King’s officials grudgingly consented to their request to refrain from eating “Babylonian-style” — but only for a short while, for fear of being blamed if the captives were unhealthy. Imagine their surprise when, at the end of the designated time, Daniel and his friends were ten times more capable than any other intellectuals — the elites of the Babylonian Empire.

In living the way they did, Daniel and his friends were able to glorify God. We are told to do the same (1 Corinthians 10:31).

We, too, should treat our bodies with respect, following God’s instructions for optimum health, to give Him the glory He deserves, just as Daniel did.

Reflection

What can — and what will — I do to be more like Daniel in my own life? How can I develop Daniel-like faith?

Prayer

Dear God, Please help me to glorify You in all I say and do. Thank You for creating me the way You did. May I bring You honor and praise in the way I treat my body. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
