Still with Me

by Margaret Michel

Psalm 101:6

My eyes will be on the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me. He who walks in a perfect way, he will serve me.

My eyes teared up as I awoke from an unwanted sleep.

I had done it again! I had dozed off while on the phone.

It wasn’t out of boredom or on purpose. My whole lifetime, I have always found it difficult to stay up past my bedtime for anybody or anything. No matter who. No matter what. No partiality.

I wish I could also say “no offense” as well. But that is not the case. Often, the other person was pouring out their heart only to detect by my breathing and lack of response that I was fast asleep. People were often highly offended. Hence my tears.

This time, although I awoke with my usual start, quite disappointed with myself that I might have hurt someone close to my heart, the line was still connected and the caller was still there. Patiently, she had waited as I slept.

She was calmly comfortable with the silence that connected us and was still with me when I awoke. Meekly. Faithfully. Her steadfast faithfulness despite my unfaithfulness brought me to the point of shedding tears.

God’s eyes are always on those who reflect Him in faithfulness. He will never sever our connection — even if we sometimes falter. His watchcare is promised.

Reflection

What traits consistently seem to sabotage faithfulness in my experience? Fear? Impatience? Pride? How can I address these?

Prayer

Holy God, Thank You for Your faithfulness to me. Despite my imperfect response to You, Your faithfulness is still, still with me. Help me become more and more complete in You as we walk together. In Jesus’ name I praise You, Amen.
