God’s Ultrasound

by Heather Tietz

Psalm 139:16

Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them.

Before the 1950s, the form and the gender of unborn babies was a mystery to humans.

Then in 1957, Doctor Ian Donald realized the sound waves used in shipyards could be used in doctor’s offices to create the image of a fetus. Now people could get a dim view of that secret place that only God had known.

Ultrasounds are amazing, but they still leave a mystery. Even today, approximately five percent of parents are surprised to discover that the gender of their baby is not what the ultrasound appeared to be. Furthermore, a baby’s talents and interests, those subjects they’ll struggle to learn, their temperaments are still unknown to us until they are born.

When life surprises us, whether that surprise is about the birth of a child, an unforeseen health problem, an accident, a raving success, or what appears to be an untimely death, none of it takes God by surprise.

When life shocks us, we can lay back in God’s arms and trust that He has a plan for us. God’s ultrasound pierces through the gloom of sin and sees a bright future for each of us, if we only believe.

Reflection

What significant event in life has been a shock to me? Have I let God help me work through it?

Prayer

Dear Lord, Thank You for seeing me as I truly am — flaws and all. Nothing I do can surprise You. Thank You for calling me Your child. I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
