You Don’t Have to Die to Be Brought Back to Life

by Darla Noble

John 11:43-44

When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

A father reaches out to his son after four years of not speaking to one another. The embrace, the tears, and the somewhat-awkward conversation are like coming back to life.

The rebellious person who turned to drugs and alcohol, but later cries out to the Lord for forgiveness and help to live a clean and God-filled life is running from death back to the freedom of life and light.

A man who humbly confesses his infidelity and asks his wife to give their marriage another chance, who hears the words, “I forgive you. Let’s save our marriage,” hears the sound of love and life being breathed back into that relationship.

There are many ways we can kill our faith and our relationship with Jesus. They can all be summed up in one word, though: sin. That is why we must stay close to Him — not stay away for days or even hours at a time. Jesus is our Savior. Our Counselor. Our Life-giver.

No matter how you are living, if you are not living in faith and obedience to Jesus, you are dying a spiritual and eternal death. But you don’t have to.

Jesus can bring you back to life. Only He can give you the freedom to live now and for all eternity.

Reflection

What is killing me spiritually? How can I be restored to life?

Prayer

Dear Jesus, Thank You for dying in my place. Thank You for setting me free from sin and death. I want to live for You and with You today, tomorrow, and forever. In Your name I pray, Amen.
