Shepherd apprenticeship begins early.

Little ones as young as four are given a few faithful animals to lead. In turn, they are encouraged to follow an older shepherd. They lead their flock to water, to pasture, and as they grow, they watch how to keep wild animals at bay and ensure that none wander off.

As the little shepherd child grows, he becomes a strong and courageous protector, defender and leader.

This was the profession of the forefathers of our Christian faith: Abraham, Jacob and his twelve sons, Moses, and young David before he became Israel’s favorite king. Shepherding has great potential to grow godly people. Jesus, after all, called Himself the Good Shepherd.

Jesus calls us to be shepherds too — apprentices, following His lead.

Inevitably, others watch our lives: our texts, social media posts, driving, entertainment, fighting, and forgiving. They see what we do and how we do it.

Whether we planned it or not, we have sheep. We may be the only one who prays for them, who gives them encouragement, who points out God’s goodness in their life. How willingly do we lead them to “green pastures and beside the still waters?” If we’re rubbing shoulders with them throughout our day then they’re in our fold.
