Some things in this world just don’t make sense to us.

I work with young people, and a question I often hear is, “why do bad things happen to good people?”

Its counterpart gets a lot of airplay as well: “why do bad people seem to have it so easy?”

At our core, we feel that people should get what they give, yet what we see often doesn’t reflect that and we deem it unfair. Many see this as a reason to find fault with the idea of God, because His good people should be blessed, not seemingly cursed.

There are verses in the Bible that tell us, however, that God does bless the righteous. For instance, Proverbs 10:6 says God blesses righteous people, while the wicked are covered with violence — even if, from our current vantage point, it may look otherwise.

While we may experience different blessings and difficulties through life, we can rejoice in the blessing of salvation. We can hope in the blessings that come with being God’s chosen people who are redeemed at the end.

Temporary blessings will come to all. In Matthew 5:45, we are told that rain falls on the righteous and unrighteous alike. Yet, when Christ returns, those who have been righteous will receive the full measure of blessing that God has desired for them from the beginning.
