Job may be the poster boy for suffering, but his endurance is the model for God’s great blessing as well.

One of the many things we can find in Job’s story is that his perseverance led him to tremendous blessing.

A friend of mine spent decades of her marriage as a “Job.” Her husband was an alcoholic. Many days when he got home, he drank himself into a stupor. He bumbled around his three boys, cursing and insulting them. Her friends, her counselor, her pastor encouraged her to divorce him.

“But if we leave,” said her youngest, “he’ll die.”

So my friend committed to stay. She shielded herself with loving friends and prayer.

Finally, ten years later, the blessings began to surface. Her husband gave his life to Christ and his eyes opened to what chaos the alcohol was causing. He limited his drinking, and then one day, stopped altogether.

I asked her son, “Why do you think you and your brothers never became alcoholics?”

“The person my dad became when he was drunk was so gross to me that I decided early on I didn’t want to be like that.”

Perseverance can lead to hidden blessings. Sometimes it takes years to realize them, but when you’ve been seeking the Lord, expect blessings to surface!
