This is the boldness which we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.
I had just finished my worship time with the prayer that God would direct my day when the phone rang.
Recently widowed, I was still vulnerable in my grief and didn’t realize that I was being scammed!
We’d had some trouble with our taxes the year before and now I was hearing that the deadline had passed and I must pay immediately. Though I am not normally a naïve person, this time I was caught and lost a large sum of money.
It would have been tempting to say, “God, didn’t I ask You to direct my day? What happened?”
But I believed God had heard my prayer and allowed this to happen for some reason.
I realized that Satan wanted to discourage me, to make me bitter about my loss of funds. I also realized that probably no one was praying for those who had robbed me. Wanting to glorify God, I increased my offerings and began praying to someday meet my scammers in heaven.
What do we really want from God? His will or ours?
Asking according to His will means that maybe we will be happy with the result and maybe not. But it is always the best prayer to pray, for His will would be ours if we could see the end from the beginning.
I look forward to knowing the end of the story someday!
For what am I praying? How do I feel about the answers those prayers are receiving? How might my prayers need to change?
Dear God, Please give me confidence that You hear and answer well, according to Your will. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
