When I was a girl, my dad loved to take us on vacations every year.

We lived in Southern California where we had the desert, the ocean, and the mountains close by.

One afternoon on our desert holiday, Daddy pointed out some glittering rocks shining like gold! My sister and I were elated and started a collection. However, he was quick to point out that this rock was also known as “fool’s gold.” We were not going to get rich on this stuff!

This Scripture passage implies that there are false vines but only one true vine. Only the true vine produces fruit, just as gold produces wealth.

Notice the three groups here: God the Father, Jesus the Son, and Christian believers.

Father Farmer ensures that the vine is healthy and productive. Jesus is the Vine that connects to the nutritious soil, enabling fruit to form. The branches of Christian believers are where the fruit manifests. If a branch gets broken, the connection is lost and the withered appendage must be cut away and discarded. Fruit-bearing branches get pruned in order to bear more fruit.

How do we remain connected to the True Vine? By obeying His Word and praying to Him, submitting to whatever pruning is necessary in order to make us productive Christians. Without these practices, we can bear no fruit in partnership with Him.
