Trading Old Toys for New Ones

by Darla Noble

Matthew 6:28-30

Why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don’t toil, neither do they spin, yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won’t he much more clothe you, you of little faith?

I love antiques — especially the memories and stories that accompany a piece of family “stuff.”

My kids played with the blocks I had as a child. They played with the Tinker Toys, used the mini Coca-Cola machine, rode in my old tin car, and played with some of my dolls. Though the kids enjoyed these things as much as I did when I was their age, one Christmas there was something special they wanted.

That year, money was extremely tight. Various little crises kept happening, and by the time November rolled around, I had next to nothing left in our Christmas budget.

I was both sad and angry.

I stood at the sink washing dishes and crying. “God all I want is $100. That’s all,” I prayed.

Later that evening I saw an ad in the paper. Someone wanted to buy vintage toys. I called the number and the man came the next evening. When he left with some of my treasures, I looked at the $200 in my hand and thanked God for His provision. And on Christmas morning, I thanked Him once again for the blessings of my children and the joy we were able to bring by trading old toys for new ones.

Reflection

What do I pray for? Does God always respond in the way I want Him to? How do I feel about God’s providence?

Prayer

Dear God, Please help me trust in You to provide for me. Thank You for the blessings You give. I know You hear my prayer. Please help to grow my faith. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
