The Downpour

by Heather Tietz

Job 19:25, 27

But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives. In the end, he will stand upon the earth. Whom I, even I, will see on my side. My eyes will see, and not as a stranger. My heart is consumed within me.

When it rains, it pours.

I sit here in the dry desert terrain of California under a cloud covered sky where it has been gushing from the heavens on and off for weeks. We are all happy for the much needed rain, but wet roads, wet clothes, cold hands, and big bills make thankfulness difficult.

At this moment, my daughter’s cat is in surgery to remove a fractured hip bone. His heart murmur gives him a less than wonderful chance of reviving from the anesthesia.

At this moment, our grandfather lays in a hospital bed with the beginnings of pneumonia, broken ribs, and a punctured lung.

Life feels a little darker here. I feel a smidgen like Job.

Poor Job suffered perhaps the worst downpour any of us have seen. He lost nearly everything.

In today’s verse, he stands doubtful that there will be any comfort. But faithful Job looks beyond his misery. Squinting past the clouds, he sees hope. He knows there is a sun. God is there whether he can feel Him or not. Sunlight, warmth, comfort, peace, and love exist just around the corner. His present sadness is just a moment in an endless, cloudless sky.

Our Redeemer lives. No matter the present darkness, there is light ahead. We will savor God’s goodness far longer and far deeper than any downpour can soak us.

Reflection

What are my struggles in life today? When I feel sad, how do I find comfort from God?

Prayer

Holy God, Please remind me to look to You when the rains in my life begin. In Jesus’ dear name I pray, Amen.
