For the LORD your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
Scorpions are built for battle. Their body is wrapped in an armor-like exoskeleton and lead by two puffed-up pinchers, like the arms of a wrestler fresh from a workout. On one side of their body are several eyes, and on the other, a strong venomous stinger. Eight nimble, muscular legs enable them to climb rough surfaces spider-fashion. Black widows, rattlesnakes and grizzly bears all have natural physical weapons crafted into their anatomy.
Humans, on the other hand, just don’t. Our flat incisors are barely adequate for ripping meat. Our skin tears. Our nails break. And if we really want to fight an enemy, we need protective clothing - armored vehicles, shields, manmade weapons, or God’s supernatural power.
Our bodies and minds were built for a something greater - love: mouths for encouraging, lips for smiling, arms for embracing, ears for listening, hands for helping, fingers for fixing. We were made to actively love God and others. It’s God’s first command!
If we are walking a righteous path and we’ve acquired enemies, like the people in Israel escaping slavery in Egypt, like David running from jealous king Saul, like Jesus on trial, then our enemies are God’s business. The war we are facing is His. We can’t lay down our faith when we stand before haters. We are still Christ-followers, kind, self-controlled and loving. Hand over your battles to Him. Trust God to discipline. Let Him save you.
