It’s been said: “It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”

We spend too much time obsessed with the evil around us. There’s so much hatred. So much violence. So many people lying and taking advantage of others. So much hopelessness and foolish behavior. We live in fear that perhaps there’s more evil than good in the world.

But, as you know, the smallest light overcomes the greatest darkness. This is a basic fact not only in our physical world, but also in the realm of the moral and the spiritual. Darkness can only overcome us if we refuse to light our candle.

You can’t live your life passively hoping the world will change, or despairing that it never will. You must depart from evil and do good. Fill your heart and mind with the light of Scripture. Declare the great deeds of God. Spend each day seeking to share His light with others, to speak His words of life, to serve others with your time, talents, and treasure.

There is hope and promise in the light of God. You can be the one who delivers that hope to the darkness of a lost world. The choice is yours…. Will you strike the match?
