Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you; that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you, in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
An opera singer overheard a conversation between his son and another boy. The boy said, "My dad knows the mayor very well!" Then his son immediately replied, "My dad knows God very well!" The singer was so moved, he cried with joy, for his son regarded him as a person who knew God.
Today's Father’s Day verse is the fifth of the Ten Commandments. The verse teaches that you, as your parents' child, are under the authority of your parents, and ultimately under the authority of a loving God.
God's command for you to submit to the authority of your parents is His way of teaching you the spiritual discipline of submitting to Him—our heavenly Father.
Your parents are God's representatives to you so that when you honor and obey them, you honor and obey God. And just as He blesses you for your obedience to your parents, He will bless you in even greater ways when you are faithfully obedient to Him.
The Bible speaks frequently on the subject of obeying your parents: Exodus 20:12, Ephesians 6:1, Col 3:20, for instance. Additionally, Jesus set the example for you when He asked John to take care of His mother, Mary, as He hung on the cross (John 19:26-27).
Do this: Honor God by honoring your father and mother.
