For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.
Several years ago, the founder of a widely-respected family ministry spoke out against some popular children’s toys and movies.
While his intentions were well-meaning, rather than making blanket statements and having the attitude of “Thus sayeth my ministry, so it must be true,” he should have made suggestions and given his opinion instead.
But because of the level of respect and admiration people had (and still do) for this ministry, scores of parents followed blindly. Even worse, a wall was erected dividing parents who took this man’s word as gospel, and parents who took a more logical approach and a more Biblical approach.
So beware when a leader begins making blanket statements and setting themselves up as the final word on something. Be careful to follow the example of the church in Thessalonica.
The Word of God is the only standard by which we must measure our lives.
How much time do I spend reading and studying the Bible each day? How does my devotional time with God compare to the time I spend on worldly entertainment?
Heavenly Lord, Please keep my mind and heart open to the teachings of those in ministry, but let me always seek the truth from the Bible, rather than trust only in men. Guide me in the choices I make in every aspect of my life. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
