Praying in the Dark

by Ami Hendrickson

Early in the morning, while it was still dark, he rose up and went out, and departed into a deserted place, and prayed there.

Mark 1:35

Jesus was in the midst of what can only be described as a whirlwind victory tour.

Not long ago he had been baptized in the Jordan River by his cousin, John. Then he spent some time in the wilderness sparring with the Devil – and besting him.

He had recently begun His ministry, preaching the truth about His Father. This meant He not only attracted devoted followers who shadowed His every move, but He also butted heads with the local religious rulers for valuing humanity over their rules. His life was caught up in an endless parade of people who needed healing and demons who needed silencing.

The first chapter of the Gospel of Mark uses the word “immediately” at least 11 times when referring to the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Things happened so quickly. There was no room for downtime.

But Jesus knew where His power came from. He knew the importance of recharging and staying connected with His Source. That’s why, early in the morning, He chose prayer to sleeping in. Leaving the comfort of His bed behind while it was still dark outside, Jesus made prayer His number one priority. He is our divine example.

It only makes sense to follow where He led, praying our way out of the darkness and into His light.

Holy, loving Father,
Help me to take time to be holy at the beginning of the day as Jesus did. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
